The History of Bar Jak...
I’m Sam, the founder and creator of Bar Jak.
Back in 2019, those days before we knew what a lockdown was, I was a Site Manager in Construction - I’m a carpenter by trade. I’d always had the desire to create a product of my own and initially tried to launch a furniture business. After this failed, I had a rethink.
I took a hard look at what I was actually passionate about. I’ve always loved fitness and most evenings you’d find me at the gym, so that’s where the spark for Bar Jak really started.
I noticed a gap in the fitness industry: there were no lightweight, portable barbell jacks on the market. Everything available was big, heavy, clunky, and totally impractical. I started sketching ideas at home, and funnily enough, the recognisable shape of the Bar Jak has barely changed since those early drawings.
One afternoon, I grabbed an off-cut of 12mm plywood from a skip on site and took it home. That evening, armed with a tape measure, jigsaw, router, pencil, and a can of baked beans for its nice round shape, I got to work. The next evening, after a long day on site, I gingerly walked into my CrossFit gym and quietly tested the prototype. A few people saw me. Some were supportive; others looked for all the reasons I wouldn’t make it work. I shot a quick video with my phone in one hand and the prototype in the other, then put it back in the car.
Driving home that night, I knew I had something. My mind was buzzing with every tweak and improvement I needed to make.
Fast-forward six years and many late nights in my garage, I’ve gone on to sell thousands of Bar Jaks across the globe, been featured in Men’s Health, shipped to customers in 32 countries, and seen the product in the hands of elite athletes at the top of their game. And now, this partnership with Watson is certainly one for the highlight reel.
